Buddies & mentors
Never arrive alone
There's always a familiar face to walk with you — whether for your first event or as a guide through your first weeks here.
The idea
A familiar face makes all the difference
Walking into a room full of strangers is scary. For many people, the thought of showing up alone to a new event or community is the reason they don't go at all. That hesitation — even though FriendShaping connects people with shared interests — is real and worth acknowledging.
A buddy isn't a chaperone or a shadow. A buddy is simply a familiar face. You arrive together, you know someone already, and that changes everything. After a few events side by side, you'll feel confident enough to explore on your own. The buddy doesn't disappear — you just don't need that scaffolding anymore.
How it works
Two kinds of buddies, one goal
FriendShaping offers two ways to connect with a buddy, depending on what you need.
Mentor buddy
A steady companion on a longer journey. A mentor buddy walks with you to your first activities and is a listening ear — someone who helps you navigate the platform, answers your questions, or just talks things through. If you prefer, conversations can stay anonymous. The relationship grows at its own pace and naturally fades when you're ready to move forward on your own.
Mentor buddy is a trusted role assigned by ambassadors and other mentors — not something you can sign up for directly. This keeps the connection safe for everyone.
Activity buddy
Real guidance for a single event. If you're nervous about a specific activity, an activity buddy — someone with a solid track record of good experiences — can meet you beforehand and you arrive together. You and your buddy have a private chat to pick a comfortable place to meet. One activity buddy can walk alongside multiple people for the same event, so nobody shows up alone.
Activity buddies earn that role through attending events and getting positive feedback from other members. That track record is your assurance they're dependable.
The journey
Four simple steps
Tell us what you need
Ask for a mentor buddy to guide you as you settle in, or choose an activity buddy for a specific event. No pressure, no strings.
We match you
For a mentor buddy, we look for someone who's a good fit — shared interests, compatible style. For an activity buddy, we find someone available who matches your preferences if you have them.
Connect
With an activity buddy, you'll use a private chat to agree on where to meet. With a mentor buddy, you'll start to know each other — through events, conversations, or just being there.
Go your own pace
When you feel ready to explore solo, you're ready. The buddy doesn't disappear — that relationship lasts as long as it's valuable for both of you.
How to become a buddy
Three paths: from member to mentor to leader
Not everyone starts looking for a buddy. If you're established on FriendShaping and want to help others grow, there are natural ways to step up — from activity buddy to mentor to ambassador. Each role builds on the last.
Activity buddy
The easiest way to start helping. Earned through your track record at events — no nomination needed.
- Show up and be dependable. Attend events, be a friendly presence, and let people see you're reliable. Other members leave feedback after activities.
- Keep your record clean. Positive feedback only. A single negative report pauses your eligibility for this role.
- Automatic when you're ready. After enough events with solid feedback, you become eligible. No application — you're matched directly with new members nervous about a specific event.
- Low commitment, high impact. You walk alongside one person for one event. That's it — but it changes everything for them.
Mentor buddy
A deeper role. By invitation only — a trusted position for members ready to guide others through their first weeks.
- You're invited, not self-nominated. Ambassadors and other mentors identify members who have the patience and warmth to mentor. This keeps the role safe for everyone.
- Mentors can nominate others — but ambassadors decide. If you want to invite someone, you propose them; an ambassador approves. Two sets of eyes, one decision.
- You become the steady guide. Help with activities, answer platform questions, listen to concerns, just be there. Conversations can stay anonymous if that feels safer for your buddy.
- Real recognition for real work. Mentors earn platform perks — membership discounts, exclusive access — reflecting the responsibility and time you give.
Ambassador
Leadership that shapes the community. Built on mentorship — only mentors with proven track records can step up.
- Mentors apply, peers decide. You've been mentoring and you're ready for more? Submit a request. Other mentors and ambassadors vote on whether you're ready for this leadership role.
- You set the tone. Ambassadors guide platform strategy, approve new mentors, shape how the buddy system evolves, and model what it means to invest in community.
- Real responsibility, real impact. You're not just helping individuals — you're helping FriendShaping grow responsibly and thoughtfully. It's a significant commitment, for members ready to do it.
In short: Activity buddy is earned. Mentor buddy is invited. Ambassador is voted in by your peers. Each one grows the community in a different way.
Trust & safety
Safe connections, built in
Safety is the foundation. Whether you're looking for a buddy or becoming one, we've designed guardrails into every role.
- Role assignments are earned or voted in, never casual. Activity buddies have proven track records. Mentors go through invitation approval. Ambassadors are voted on by peers. This prevents fast decisions about trust.
- Feedback keeps the system honest. Bad experiences get reported; positive reports are the only path to bigger roles. Someone with negative feedback can't become a buddy.
- All chats stay in-platform. Conversations are private but recorded — so if something feels off, you have a record and can reach out for support.
- You're never locked in. Switch buddies anytime. Take a break. Step back when you need to. Control is yours.
Your privacy
Safe conversations, your choice
Like everything on FriendShaping, your buddy experience is built with privacy in mind. Conversations between you and your buddy stay in-platform (so there's a record if you need support), and you're always in control: what you share, when you respond, what you show — it's your call. Mentor buddies can choose to stay anonymous by name if that feels safer.
