Our story
About FriendShaping
A community where everyone belongs. Whether you're looking to break out of isolation or simply find your people — runners, chess enthusiasts, yoga practitioners, or anyone in between. Not a dating app. A friendship and activity platform built for real connections.
Why we started
Connecting around what matters
Social media promised connection, but delivered isolation. We saw people scrolling alone, stuck in algorithms that show them what keeps them engaged, not what moves them. We also saw active people — cyclists, photography enthusiasts, yoga practitioners, language learners, gaming groups — struggling to find others with the same passions.
And we saw people like us: facing the barrier of that first step alone, wondering if we'd fit in, if we'd be judged. Whether you're fighting loneliness or simply looking for your people, that barrier shouldn't exist. It doesn't matter if you're into tennis, cooking classes, board games, rock climbing, or anything in between — you shouldn't have to take that first step alone. And you shouldn't have to curate a perfect profile to be welcome.
Our mission
Real connections through shared action
We help people find their people, not through algorithms, but through activities they care about. A tennis court, a pottery class, a running group, a film screening club — these are the places where real friendships form. Our job is to make sure nobody has to walk in alone, and to create a space where every interest, every level, every person is genuinely welcomed.
Our buddy & mentor system lowers that barrier: a familiar face to walk in with, so you can focus on the activity, not the anxiety.
Our vision
A platform shaped by its community, built for everyone
We want FriendShaping to be the place people turn to when they want to find their people, no matter what brings them together. That means staying true to our members — whether they're looking for hiking buddies, photography partners, salsa dancers, or trivia night teammates — and growing in a way that keeps the community warm and judgment-free.
Our members don't just use FriendShaping; they shape it. New features, new activity types, new ways to meet are decided together through Community Consensus.
What we believe
The principles behind every decision
Trust first
Every feature is designed with safety in mind. You can be yourself here.
Action over performance
We don't optimize for perfect profiles. We optimize for real activities and real connection.
Acceptance without judgment
There's no "wrong" interest, no "wrong" level. Beginners and experts, introverts and extroverts — all welcome.
Built together
This platform grows through its community's voice. Your idea, your feedback, your vision matters.
Deliberately not
No points, likes or rankings
Many apps keep you hooked with points, badges, streaks and rankings. We deliberately don't. Friendship is not a competition, and there is nothing to earn here.
A reward crowds out the fun
Once you get a reward for something, it soon becomes about the reward instead of the reason you did it. An overview of 128 experiments shows this (Deci, Koestner & Ryan, 1999).
Comparing adds pressure
Meeting new people is a little exciting for almost everyone. You naturally notice how others see you, even more so when you are somewhere new (Cacioppo & Hawkley, 2009). Visible scores and rankings only make that heavier.
The effect does not last
Research on points and badges finds small effects that often fade once the novelty wears off (Hamari, Koivisto & Sarsa, 2014; Sailer & Homner, 2020).
What we are about
Bringing people together again: to play sport together, share a hobby, find a buddy for what you love, try something new, or simply have a good conversation. In a busy time full of screens, social media and AI, real contact easily fades into the background, while connection is exactly what happiness and health are built on. People with strong social ties are much more likely to live longer (Holt-Lunstad et al., 2010), and the longest-running study of happiness names relationships as the most important factor for a good life (Harvard Study of Adult Development).
That is why we base our choices on research wherever we can, explain why something helps, and only you see your own progress.
